Stadhalendorf is a town in the German state of Hesse, located in the Marburg-Biedenkopf district. The city has 21,263 inhabitants. The city was called Allendorf until 1960, when it received city rights it became Stadt Allendorf. In 1977 it was renamed Stadhalendorf.
There were many villages called Allendorf, this one also was called Catholic Allendorf.
During World War II, Catholic Allendorf was a secret munitions center. The armament firms WASAG AG (Westfalisch-Anhaltische Sprengstoff-AG) and DAG (Dynamit Nobel AG Verwertchemie, former Alfred Nobel)) produced munitions and explosives. At the time, it was the greatest of all munitions production centers in Europe. Even today, some neighborhoods in Stadtallendorf are still named after munitions businesses.

The munitions center continued through the war without being detected by the Allies. The 6 square kilometer premises where the wartime arms works were built were said to be one of Germany's biggest contaminated former industrial sites, in parts with high concentrations of chemical contaminants on residential properties. Since 1991, the premises have undergone a far-reaching cleanup; in March 2006, the job was officially declared done. 154 tonnes of contaminants were dug out of the ground, 697 tonnes were dug out of a dump, and 3 tonnes of TNT – still capable of exploding – were unearthed.

Notice that a number of the buildings were half undergroud to prevent destruction of other buildings after a explosion.

The target of the development of the city construction is it to give to the individual housing developments around Stadtallendorf a vibrant city center. By October 1980 the first section was finished. It covers a pedestrian precinct with a retail trade and a service area beside a market place with natural stone wells and generous parking facilities.
The attractiveness of the new city center has continued to improve in recent years and continues today by settlement of additional specialist shops and services enterprises. Added in January 1983 the City Hall, a sports hall with 1,000 seats, the fire-brigade headquarters and 142 new housing units.
